Manifesto: Performative Sociology

I am a sociologist.

This is a manifesto toward the performative sociology.

Since the 1970s, it has been overturned the philosophical foundation or belief on which the world of science stands or depends. Scientific revolution theory of Kuhn, truth theory of Foucault, language game theory of Wittgenstein, another thoughts of so-called post-modernism and post-structuralism, these had enough destructive power to make suspected the legitimacy of  scientific actions. Moreover, cultural anthropology to be focused on empirical research, such as field work, has problematized a political implications of writing culture, also in the middle of the crisis of representation, the idea of objectivity of social research is negated. Sociology has also been swallowed by these waves. But still sociology has been advocating the positivistic science, with the model of natural sciences. That's absurd!

But, being positivistic in the study of human sciences, should turned out to be quite suspicious and questioning. Scientific cycle of hypothesis, verification, theory and reasoning, can not make it possible to understand the human world. Even parts of the human which have been analysed with a view through the microscope ,can not aggregate  to whole human as a human being itself. Human can not be reconstructed with parts, as Dr.Frankenstein could not. Although you can explain precisely each parts, it is impossible, to reach the human world or human existence as whole. Until now, sociology has been the act to understand the human in the collective category as ethnicity, gender, sexualities, class, hierarchy and occupation, but this focus on man as part can not grasp human as a whole, can not reach our lived experiences.

Understanding the human as a whole does not  find out one correct answer, one correct discription ,one correct suggestion. Just another way. Because, as long as we  live, man is constantly changing, or shows up depending on the situation. Such task is one that is up to art this two~three hundred years. Literature, novel, drama, poetry, painting and sculpture, theater and dance, music, photography and film. It can be said that art work  has been trying to understand a whole  human, not from stereotypical standpoint, and to convey this understandings into our lives and worlds. So, no wonder, sociology begins  to use this property of arts. After all, art and science broke up this several hundred years.

In addition, a philosophical viewpoint  so-called Social Costructionism makes it clear that world or reality does not exist as itself, but  is constituted. This view suspends even the boundaries of fact and fiction. Meaningless  is to devide human acts into sciences dealing with facts and arts creating fictions. And also, it is not possible to give priority to communication inside of scientific community,  social sciences  have to be published, presented, expressed towards people of diverse broader frame.  Among them, research act that uses art, Arts Based Research, appeared in the 1990s.

Some attempt like  autoethnography, native ethnography and so on, has already adopted a poetic expressions, play writings or everday language, rather than the words of the social sciences. Already social sciences are close to reportage or literature. Yes,play readings, drama, dance, movie and video may be employed.

ABR is an effort to employ the expressive qualities of form in order to enable a reader of that research to participate in the experience of the author. ABR is a heuristic through which we deepen and make more complex our understanding of some aspect of the world. ABR does not yield propositional claims about state of affairs. It tries to create insight into states of affairs whose utility is tested when those insights are applied to understand what has been addressed in the research. Arts make it possible for us to empathize with the experience of others. We believe that such empathy is a necessary condition for deep forms of meanings in human life. Reexperiencing brings us into deeper persuation.

Performative sociology, as one of  ABR, uses act or  physical presentation. Performance art ( Aktionskunst, Body Art, etc.) has immediacy  or presentness,  this charachter can be critical against even modern world view as instrumental society. Performance negates the difference between being and appearance, presentation and re-presentation.

According to performative sociology, the belief that artistic work as itself exist independent on events of exhibition, performance or reading, must be abandoned.   It is also  to deny the belief that there can be so-called objective facts separated from audience, reader or sociologists themselves. Much farther we can say,  realities are ad hoc constructed by us who are present now and here, as an achievement of our mutual performance interaction. We are always performative. Or we are all destined to be performative.

We must  be researchers, who will  re-search our taken-for-granted world.

I  declare here,  I must  be  a performative sociologist.
